Thomas Adam Johnson

Thomas Adam Johnson — known to the world as TAJ — is a bassist, pianist, composer, and musical director whose career has moved at the highest altitudes of American music for more than three decades. Raised in Baltimore and rooted in Dallas, he built his voice at the intersection of jazz, gospel, R&B, soul, and world music: fluent in every language, beholden to none.

On stage, his roster reads like a summit. TAJ has toured and performed alongside Stephanie Mills, Maysa Leak, Vivian Green, Keshia Cole, Ciara, Estelle, Kelly Rowland, CeCe Winans, Fred Hammond, Harvey Mason, Kirk Franklin, and Jill Scott — among many others. Every room he has entered, he has held.

In the studio, his fingerprints are on some of gospel and soul's most celebrated recordings. TAJ has contributed to Grammy-nominated and Stellar and Dove Award–winning projects alongside Jeff Bradshaw, Angie Stone, Donnie McClurkin, Anthony Brown, Jonathan Nelson, Jason Nelson, and Dorinda Clark-Cole — sessions defined by precision, feel, and an instinct for exactly what a song needs.

Beyond his work as a sideman and collaborator, TAJ is a fully realized artist in his own right. His original music draws on jazz sophistication, global rhythms, and deep groove — shaped by long conversations with acclaimed collaborators Tim Green, Federico Peña, Isaiah Sharkey, and Quincy Phillips.
